I recently purchased this set to add an addition to my current standard barbell and plates that I have had and used for years. As they are described, the plates are decent but are of a rough cast, with some of the larger plates I received having retained slightly raised semi-sharp casting remnants left on the edges of the plates from their production. The larger plates I received have the raised painted silver York lettering, but the smaller 10’s, 5’s, and 2.5’s have only the unpainted raised black York lettering.

This may be one explanation as to what they mean when they say that a “slight variation in color is possible” in the product description. The barbell itself is of good quality. It is a “real” 45lb. olympic barbell. Some lower quality olympic sets substitute an inferior 35lb. barbell, so this is something to consider when purchasing an olympic set. York claims this barbell has a 700lb. test rating. If that is the case, then this barbell would most likely be fine for most home lifters.

The knurling on the barbell is smooth, not jagged, and overall feels decent. I believe this is a good deal for a quality rugged olympic set, especially for the current price of around $300 with free shipping included. I have seen other sets advertised that cost way more, and for what most non-commercial users would need/want out of an olympic set, this is most likely among the best deals currently available for the money. I would just like to add that I have since discovered the reason I believe my smaller plates are unpainted. The reason I believe this to be is because I received with my set the better York Legacy olympic plates.

These plates are supposedly milled to within 2% accuracy of their indicated weight listing on the plate. The image given for the York 300lb. Olympic weight set shows the plates as being the regular York International olympic plates. These are supposedly not as accurate or cost as much as York’s Legacy line of olympic plates. This being said, I do not know if most ordering this set wind up with the regular York International olympic plates which are shown in the image, or wether or not they receive the better York Legacy ones.
