   ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1005PE-PU27-BK 10.1-Inch Black Netbook (Up to 14 Hours of Battery Life)

   I received this net book yesterday, and, to my very surprise, it turned out that the recovery DVD/Support CD that is included in ALL of the other versions of ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1005PE is NOT included in this particular version. (I simply cannot understand why Amazon made this the case.) The description on the Amazon website is misleading, since there is nowhere where it explicitly warns the customer that this will be the case for this particular package. True.. according to “what is included in the box” Amazon does not list the recovery DVD/Support CD among the things included. But, without an explicit warning that this is so, the potential customer will very likely assume that the only difference between this version and the others is in the soft-touch exterior and would very likely take for granted that what is included in the box would be “exactly the same” as the non-Amazon exclusive versions of the ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1005PE model, which DOES include a recovery DVD/Support CD. I am returning this net book, because I do believe that having a recovery DVD/Support CD is essential when your computer starts to cause problems. Any potential buyers who are considering to buy this Amazon exclusive soft-touch exterior version should bear in mind that a recovery DVD/Support CD is NOT included in this version of the product!

   Thought long and hard on writing this review but the frustration I have impedes me from doing so.Short & simple then: I’ve been a die hard Windows XP Pro user for about 6 years.I even thought Win XP Home on my Acer netbook was very decent.Bought this Asus for one reason only:Battery life.

   Never tried Vista cause I heard it was horrible…Well Win7 Starter is the same exact thing.Extremely frustrating.Im not a computer genius, But I am savvy.There is a new learning curve if your jumping from XP to Windows 7.

   The netbook itself is great.I really like it, (and Im gonna like it even more when I ditch Win7 Starter) what kills it for me is the OS.On that alone I would not recommend this to anyone unless you are planning on upgrading to Home or Premium or whatever they call it now.Windows 7 Starter is absolute garbage.I remember when buying a pc or laptop included a complete OS.Shame on Microsoft for using this tactic to leech off another $200 from the consumer.I read a review by one of Microsoft’s top people.He said this is what the consumer wanted and went on and on justifying why they put out this garbage.That netbook users are casual users etc. Im a consumer & no, this is not what I wanted or expected.I use my netbook more than my regular laptop at home.I run Photoshop CS4 on my Acer netbook & many other apps.I take it everywhere I go & use it for different tasks.Taking notes, chatting, organizing files on 3 portable harddrives etc etc

   And I will not be upgrading.I will be installing Windows XP Pro Lite which is blazing fast and doesnt have to “Load” when you do something as simple as clicking on “My Computer”.

   I did it on my Acer which had XP Home and now its faster with XP Pro Lite.

   Don’t buy this.Only reason why Im keeping it, is ’cause of the battery life.

   I just got my netbook in the mail today and it is even better than I expected. So far I am absolutely thrilled.

   i purchased this netbook a week ago, absolutely love it. I had spent about a week looking and reviewing other netbooks, but this one had won. as soon as i received it i did the 8 hour charge at my office, took it home and installed a 2 gig stick of ram (very easy) and installed 7 ultimate 64 bit version. you dont need the recovery disk because its all on the hard drive, if not then find a friend with a windows disk to reload. all the drivers -1 the video driver (x64 version only) is available at first load of windows 7 and if you are loading any other version all the drivers can be located on the asus website. the only one was the video driver i found that on intels website under the atom processor. after all installed, with office 07 ultimate and a few nitbits it runs great i get ehh 10 hours on battery so far. here are the stats from the windows rating.

   processor: 2.4
   
   ram: 4.7
   
   Graphics: 2.9
   
   Gaming Graphics: 3.0
   
   Primary Hard disk: 5.9

   love the rocker mouse button, and the multi-touch mouse pad
   
   keyboard makes great for typing. and it has a little quick boot button that boots into a version of linux just for web browsing and such, its fast so i kept it. all in all great computer, cool running, makes a whisper of a noise (have to put my ear on it to hear anything) very light, very sturdy, i carry mine around the house with the screen open and hold it with just my fingers as i walk from room to room. (very sturdy)

   This is a perfect little notebook for surfing the web, watching videos, and for having a full functioning laptop that is also ultra portable. It does take a bit of use to get use to the 92% full size keyboard, but once you do its easy to forget that its any smaller than a standard size. The touchpad is easier and more functional than most I have used, but I do recommend buying the Asus optical mouse for use at home. The only complaint I have is that the speakers are a little sub-par, but hey, its a netbook. Solved that with a pair of hp usb powered speakers. All in all, the more I use the Asus, the more I like it.
